Nikolaas Boden

Nikolaas Boden was born in what is now Zimbabwe in 1959, but grew up in The UK. After Foundation at the London College of Printing, BA in Graphic Design at Leeds Polytechnic and Painting with Maggi Hambling at Morley College, he set up as a portrait painter and illustrator in London. His work was principally nudes in oil on canvas at this point. A move to Berlin followed in 1990, where he expanded his activities into graphic design and book illustration. His first hands-on encounter with computers was in 1995, opening his horizons to digital media, which led in the year 2000 to an interest in photography. Since 2014 he has been working with ceramics, alongside collage and assemblage, resulting in a broad range of material and technique. The central note though is a concern with hierarchies, power balances and imbalances conveyed with contrasts of material and style, not infrequently with an ironic touch.
Nikolaas Boden is represented by Galerie Z22, Berlin
